December 4, 8:00am-5:00pm, Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Chicago, IL This meeting is held in cooperation with the Fall 2006 Internet2 Member Meeting, which will be held Dec. 4-7 at Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, 2233 S. Martin L. King Drive, Chicago, IL 60616-- Official announcement
Meeting Description
The Research and Education Data Depot Network (REDDnet, “ready net”) is a wide area storage network that is being created to support data intensive collaboration among researchers, teachers, and students who are distributed across Internet 2 and other research networks. Launching this fall with funding from the NSF, it will provide its users with at least ½ PB of “work space” in disk storage and 200 TB of tape storage for more long term and archival purposes. It will use Logistical Networking (LN) middleware, based on the Internet Backplane Protocol (IBP), in order to maximize easy and scalable deployment, freedom and flexibility for application developers, and sustainable interoperability. This one day REDDnet Tools and Applications Meeting will bring together leaders from REDDnet’s different application communities, software developers, and LN researchers in order to showcase this new national cyberinfrastructure’s capabilities, share user experiences, educate the Internet 2 community about available software tools, and chart the directions for future growth.
The meeting will be led by Physicist Paul Sheldon from Vanderbilt University, lead PI of REDDnet, and Micah Beck from the University of Tennessee, a leader of the LN computer science research community. Participants will include scientists and teachers from several REDDnet application communities (e.g. Particle Physics, Geospatial/Satellite data, Astrophysics, Electron Microscopy, and Fusion Energy), as well as application and middleware developers, IT researchers, and international partners, both academic and commercial. The agenda will focus on real world experience and practical applications, but directions of future LN research and development will also be discussed. Presentations and panel discussions will include the following topics:
- Experiences of REDDnet application communities and collaborators
- Tutorials on REDDnet middleware and tools, such as L-Store, LoDN and StoreCore.
- Performance results using REDDnet for data logistics
- Activities of REDDnet’s international partners
- Deploying REDDnet on a campus LAN
- plans for future expansion and new tools for REDDnet
Space is limited, so if you are interested in participating, please contact Paul Sheldon <paul.sheldon@vanderbilt.edu> or Micah Beck <mbeck@cs.utk.edu>.
